Charlotte Harbor, FL - The South Florida PGA defeated the North Florida PGA in the 19th Senior Challenge Cup Matches at Aileron Golf Club, successfully defending the Cup for the fourth consecutive year.
The South Florida PGA, captained by Roger Kennedy Sr., PGA Life Member, earned 18.50 points to North Florida’s 11.50 points in the annual Ryder Cup style matches, played yesterday and today.
The two-day event was broken up into four separate formats, played over 36-holes. South Florida jumped out to an early lead in the opening four-ball matches, claiming four matches and tying two. Heading into the afternoon foursome matches, South Florida held a commanding 5-1 lead before tacking on four more points to North Florida’s two.
South Florida concluded day one with a 9-3 lead, needing 15.5 total points to retain the Cup. After an undefeated record at the 44th Annual Challenge Cup Matches earlier this month, Tim Cantwell, PGA of PGA National Golf Club kept the momentum going teaming up with Mike San Fillipo, PGA Life Member to win their opening match 3 & 2 and their afternoon match 4 & 3. The duo of Brett Melton, PGA of Apogee Golf Club and Mark Brown, PGA of The Yacht and Country Club added two opening day points, winning their matches 1 up and 3 & 1.
Day two began with a scramble where South Florida added 2.5 more points as the duo of San Filippo and Cantwell won their match 1 up while Colin Amaral, PGA of The Country Club at Mirasol and Rod Curl, PGA of Crane Watch Club won their match 4 & 3.
With only singles matches left to be played, South Florida held a 11.5 - 6.5 lead. After wins from Pete Oakley, PGA Life Member, Ben Stewart, PGA of Grand Harbor Club, Curl and Cantwell, South Florida had successfully earned 15.5 points to retain the Cup. With the singles win, Cantwell was able to stay undefeated for the third consecutive year, competing in six total Challenge and Senior Challenge Cup Matches.
Leaving no doubt, San Filippo and Alan Morin, PGA of The Club at Ibis simultaneously finished their matches as South Florida managed to claim the Cup outright, adding another win to the historical cup record of 15-3-1.
Each team was made up of 12 PGA Professionals who earned an invitation based on ROLEX Senior Player of the Year Points Standings. The following PGA Professionals made up the South Florida PGA team:
Colin Amaral, PGA Mark Brown, Tim Cantwell, Rod Curl, Brett Melton, Mike Melton, Alan Morin, Mike San Filippo, Ben Stewart, Pete Oakley and Jerry Tucker.
