"Father, husband, service member, and civilian worker."
These are the words Todd Frey used to describe his identity.
This year, Frey, a PGA HOPE graduate, was selected as a PGA HOPE Ambassador and will attend the 2025 PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week, where he will complete the requirements to officially fulfill the role.
His story underscores the mission of PGA HOPE, which focuses on helping Veterans improve their well-being through golf and reflects his lifelong commitment to service. Since 2015, the South Florida PGA Foundation has impacted more than 1,550 Veterans.
Frey had a military career spanning over two decades, serving in both active and reserve roles before retiring as a US Navy Chief in 2019.
After transitioning to civilian life, Frey's dedication to serving the Veteran community continued.
"I currently work for a company called Equinix," said Frey. "We have a Pathways program, which supports underrepresented workforce members, such as Veterans, Military Service Members, and Military Spouses."
Frey's civilian work and recruiting experience align well with the goals he is pursuing through the PGA HOPE program.
"When I moved to my house in Babcock National, I ended up buying a home on the golf course," explained Frey. "Although I wasn't a seasoned golfer, I enjoyed playing. I figured since I lived on a golf course, I better get better at the game. I found myself falling in love with the sport and watching the PGA TOUR."
Through researching golf, Frey discovered PGA HOPE, and he was excited to learn the program was offered nearby at Heritage Palms Golf & Country Club.
"We Veterans like to have something to identify ourselves with, where we feel safe and have a sense of belonging and unity," Frey shared. "And PGA HOPE tied into something I had a true passion for—golf."
For Frey, PGA HOPE became more than just an introduction to the game. It was an opportunity to reconnect with a diverse group of Veterans and find a renewed sense of community. "There was such a diverse group of people in my class. It wasn't just people I would've served with—people my age or from my time frame. It was a complete mixture of people," Frey recalled.
He quickly realized that the participants shared a fundamental bond despite differences in age, service branch, or experience. "What the common denominator is—no matter where you served, when you served, or how you served—there is that shared experience of service. I felt so blessed to be a part of something, and it was as close as I would get to being on the PGA TOUR."
The positive impact of PGA HOPE motivated Frey to take on more responsibility. "After completing the program, I wanted more. I wanted to be a part of it, something bigger than myself. I knew I wanted to give back."
As a National PGA HOPE Ambassador, Frey will represent the South Florida PGA Section on a broader scale and work to engage more Veterans in the program. His goal is to expand PGA HOPE's reach, particularly on the West Coast, helping Veterans find camaraderie, purpose, and joy through golf.
"Golf gives us a reason to keep going, to reconnect—not just with each other, but with ourselves," Frey explained. "That's what I want other Veterans to experience."
