Vero Beach, FL - Justin Hicks, PGA finished the second annual Bushnell Stroke Play Championship at 11-under, 65-65–132 to claim his first South Florida PGA Section Major at John’s Island Club and Indian River Club.
In addition to winning the Major, Hicks, a Teaching Professional at Stonebridge Country Club, successfully qualified for his third consecutive Corales Puntacana Championship on the PGA TOUR.
“We have a really strong Section here and it is cool in a way because in order to come out at the top or near the top, you have to play great golf,” explained Hicks. “It is nice to get a Section win no matter what it is and this one is pretty good.”
After finishing his opening round at 6-under at John’s Island Club - North, Hicks was tied with Michael Katrude, PGA of the Bear’s Club who played Indian River Club. Due to the event being at two different facilities, Hicks and Kartude were not paired together during the second round.
While looking at the leaderboard is not typically Hicks’ playing style, this one felt different and with the strong play of Kartrude throughout this season, Hicks knew he needed to know where he stood in relation to the field
“He (Kartrude) has been showing up in these second rounds all year where he shoots 60-nothing and just leap frogs everybody,” said Hicks who lost to Katrude in the recent Southeast Chapter Championship and in a playoff hole at the Fort Lauderdale Open. “I actually looked at the leaderboard a few times down the stretch to see if I needed to make a birdie or not and that goes against what I do and who I am.”
With the top of the leaderboard tight, Hicks began to break away, finishing his final nine holes at 3-under to secure the win by two shots over Brant Peaper of Lost Tree Club and Domenico Geminiani, PGA of Old Corkscrew Golf Club. Kartrude played his final round a 2-under to take solo fourth place while Brady Allbritton of Wildcat Run Golf and Country Club and Allastair Mackenzie, PGA of Trump National Golf Club finished in a tie for fifth at 3-under.
In the senior division, Pete Oakley, PGA claimed victory at 3-under, beating out Colin Amaral, PGA of the Country Club at Mirasol and Tim Cantwell, PGA of PGA National Golf Club by two shots in a tight battle.
Oakley concluded his opening round with a 4-under 67, the senior low-round by one shot, managing six birdies throughout the round. Heading into the final round, Oakley had a one shot lead over Ben Stewart, PGA of Grand Harbor Golf and Beach Club. A 1-over final round was enough to hold off the rest of the field by two shots to earn the win.
