The notion that "It is better to give than receive" deeply resonates with Hunter Hallowell. As a cherished friend, fervent supporter, and vocal advocate, Hallowell's contributions to the South Florida PGA Foundation have left an indelible mark on its outreach initiatives.
For over two decades, the South Florida PGA Foundation has dedicated itself to serving youth, military, and families throughout the local community, impacting more than 15,000 lives through the game of golf.
"When I retired and moved to south Florida, I met Dana Middleton [SFPGA HOPE Classic Tournament Committee Member], who got me involved with PGA HOPE," recalled Hallowell.
The rest is history: Hallowell has participated in seven of nine PGA HOPE Classics, an annual event that brings together like-minded, philanthropic business leaders from the local community to raise funds and awareness for the SFPGA Foundation's flagship military program, PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere). This charitable event has raised over $500,000 for local PGA HOPE programming.
"Through the first two years of the PGA HOPE Classic, I came to really enjoy it as I got to know everyone and learn about the program," said Hallowell. "Meeting and playing with the Veterans is surreal and rewarding."
PGA HOPE is a free program that allows Veterans and Active-Duty Military personnel to learn the game of golf. Golf is proven to help Veterans assimilate back into their community and improve their overall well-being through the social interaction and camaraderie the game provides.
Hallowell finds the Veterans "a group uniquely deserving of special efforts." Last year, Hallowell hosted two play days for more than 30 Veterans at Banyan Golf Club and Breakers West Country Club, where he personally played and interacted with them.
Through Hallowell's steadfast support of PGA HOPE and active participation in the PGA HOPE Classic, he has made a tangible difference in countless Veterans' lives and set a powerful example for others to follow.
"It is gratifying to witness the relief and joy experienced by the Veterans. We must never forget how much they give us," emphasized Hallowell.
Since 2015, the SFPGA has impacted nearly 1,600 Veterans and Active-Duty Military personnel through over 100 six-week PGA HOPE programs. This year, the Foundation is on track to host a record 25 programs in one year.
"If you see the SFPGA Foundation or PGA HOPE, try it. Get involved. You'll like it," said Hallowell. "The people are fantastic on all sides, and the work is important and rewarding. Just try it."
