We were all able to watch the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, as athletes from all over the world represented their respective countries. The 2024 Presidents Cup begins at the end of this month with the best American and International players from the PGA TOUR competing against one another. There is an honor that comes with representing your country on a National stage, and opportunities in golf only come around so often.
Next week, Matt Cahill, PGA, Tyler Collet, PGA and Jeremy Wells, PGA will all have that honor, representing the United States as members of the 31st PGA Cup Team, competing against Great Britain and Ireland, September 10-15 at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.
“It’s an incredible honor,” expressed Collet, of John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fl. “Not only to get to represent the South Florida Section on the National stage, but to represent the USA for the first time, I couldn’t be more thrilled!”
First played in 1973, the PGA Cup is a biennial contest between PGA Professionals from the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland and the PGA of America. The event is contested by teams of 10 players over three days, with four foursomes and four four-ball matches on each of the first two days, and 10 singles matches on the final day.
The U.S. Team was determined through a two-year point system, which included the 2023-24 PGA Professional Championships and 2023-24 PGA Championships. The points race concluded with the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
The SFPGA holds three of the 10 roster spots for the first time in Section history.
“To have three players selected from the South Florida PGA is incredible, it's a testament to the high level of play in our section,” said Cahill, the Head Golf Professional at Seminole Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fl. “No wonder it is so hard to win a Section event,” added Wells, the Director of Instruction at Cypress Lake Golf Club in Estero, Fl.
Over the two year point cycle, Cahill, Collet and Wells have played in a combined four PGA Championships: Matt Cahill - 2023 PGA Championship | Tyler Collet - 2024 PGA Championship | Jeremy Wells - 2023 & 2024 PGA Championship
Cahill, Collet and Wells, joined by their seven other teammates, will look to defeat PGA of Great Britain & Ireland to retain the Cup as they travel west for the 31st PGA Cup in Sunriver, Oregon.
“Im proud to represent our incredible country and can’t wait to tee it up and fight for a win for the PGA of America,” exclaimed Wells.
