VERO BEACH (Sept. 8, 2023) – Tyler Collet of Vero Beach continued his dominant play in the South Florida PGA on Friday when he won the Bushnell Stroke Play Championship at Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club.
Collet, a PGA Assistant Professional at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, showed why he’s the reigning South Florida PGA Player of the Year by collecting his third title of the season. He opened with a course-record 8-under 64 Thursday and never trailed.
But the win didn’t come easy – Collet saw his four-shot lead at the start of the day turn into a tie with one of his playing partners, Christian De Greiff, PGA, of Coral Ridge Country Club, after De Greiff played his first 16 holes in seven-under.
Collet parred the Harbor Course’s difficult par-3 17th, which earned him the lead for good when De Greiff bogeyed the hole after missing the green. Collet won at 11-under 131 after his final-round 67. Collet didn’t make a bogey in 36 holes.
“I didn’t play great today, but I didn’t play that badly,” Collet said. “I thought I was in good shape, but Christian came out of nowhere on the back nine. Once we were tied, I wanted to finish with two pars and see if that would be enough.”
It turned out to be. De Grieff hit into a bunker on the 17th hole and failed to get up and down. Collet also missed the green, but chipped within a foot. Collet clinched the win with a routine par at the 18th.
“It was definitely a good battle. I enjoyed putting some pressure on Tyler,” said De Grieff, a PGA Teaching Professional. “I just kind of ran out of steam at the end. I had the pleasure of playing with Tyler the last two days and he just doesn’t make many mistakes. He’s very consistent and a great putter.”
Collet seems poised to win his second consecutive Player of the Year Award, but is hoping he won’t earn a third one next year. That’s because last week he made it through the first stage of qualifying for the DP World Tour, finishing T14 with a final-round 2-under to barely advance.
“That’s always been my dream, to play professionally,” said Collet, who recently turned 28. “I feel I have the game to do it and a lot of people at JI (John’s Island) have been supporting me and telling me to go for it.”
Justin Hicks, PGA, of Stonebridge Country Club finished third, three shots back, after a final-round 66 on the Harbor Course. Hicks played in more than 100 PGA Tour events and led after the first round of the 2008 U.S. Open – the one where Tiger Woods won on a broken leg – before becoming a PGA Teaching Professional.
Alan Morin, PGA, of The Club at Ibis and Troy Pare, PGA, of host Grand Harbor shot 6-under 66s Friday on the Harbor Course to share fourth place at six-under 136 with Dakun Chang, PGA, (67) of Seminole Golf Club and Jeremy Wells, PGA, (68) of Cypress Lake Golf Club.
