Naples, FL - The South Florida PGA defeated the North Florida PGA for the fourth consecutive year to successfully defend the 44th Annual Challenge Cup.
Team South Florida earned 15 points to North Florida’s nine points in Ryder Cup-style matches played yesterday and today at Imperial Golf Club in Naples, FL. With the win, South Florida earned the Challenge Cup for the 28th time, while North Florida remains at 14 victories.
“It was great to watch some amazing golf this week, " said John Lee, PGA General Manager at Imperial Golf Club and Captain of team South Florida. “It is a culmination of multiple factors, and for everything to work the way it did was special to a part of.”
Opening with four-ball matches, South Florida jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, winning three matches, tying two, and only dropping one match. Remaining in control, South Florida again claimed four points in the afternoon foursome matches, ending day one with an 8-4 lead.
The veteran duo of Justin Bertsch, PGA, and Tim Cantwell, PGA, led the charge on day one, winning both of their matches, 4 & 3 and 4 & 2, while 2024 Section Champion Andrew Filbert, PGA, assisted in winning both of his opening day matches. Making his Challenge Cup debut, Domenico Geminani, PGA, commanded both opening day matches, winning his morning match with teammate Justin McCarraher, PGA, 5 & 4. In the afternoon, Geminiani teamed up with fellow first-year Challenge Cup participant Nick Latimer, PGA, to win their match 4 & 3.
Heading into the singles matches, South Florida needed 12 points to retain the Cup and 12.5 to win outright. Bertsch tallied the first point of the day with an 8 & 7 win, while Latimer and Justin Hicks followed closely behind, closing out their matches 4 & 3 and 4 & 2, respectively. After a tie from Andrew Filbert, Cantwell added the winning point with a 7 & 6 victory.
Dakun Chang and Alan Morin continued adding on with individual wins, while Evan Bowser, PGA, managed a tie to bring the point total to 15.
Each team was made up of 12 PGA of America Golf Professionals who earned an invitation based on ROLEX Player of the Year Points Standings.
