“You never really know what these kids are going through, but seeing the joy on their faces makes everything worthwhile.”
Jon Pazdera, PGA Director of Golf at Cypress Lake Golf Club, visited Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida weekly to administer the South Florida PGA Foundation’s Smiling Fore Life program before the pandemic.
Launched in 2010, Smiling Fore Life offers children and families facing hardships a unique outlet through the game of golf. The program is designed to bring joy and distraction to young patients during difficult times.
“Smiling Fore Life helps get the kids out of their hospital rooms,” Pazdera explained. “A lot of them have never even touched a golf club before. But just like the name says, seeing the smiles on their faces sticks with you—watching them forget, even if for just a moment, why they’re there.”
Smiling Fore Life is currently offered at six locations across south Florida, including Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Quantum House, Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, and Valerie’s House.
"It's not always about golf,” emphasized Pazdera. “It's about making kids happy and growing the game in hopes that when they get out of the hospital, they might take up golf and have a sport for a lifetime."
The South Florida PGA Foundation is continuing its support of children’s healthcare in our local community through the inaugural West Coast Play Yellow Birdie Bash. The event aims to raise $200,000 for the SFPGA Foundation and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, where Pazdera initially became involved with the Smiling Fore Life initiative.
South Florida PGA of America Professionals will take on the 81-hole challenge, with each birdie backed by donor pledges, October 14 at The Glades Golf and Country Club in Naples.
Pazdera encourages others to join the effort. “We have so many PGA Professionals in our Section. Just imagine the difference we could make if more people got involved.”
The South Florida PGA Foundation is a not-for-profit organization founded to support the south Florida community, focusing on military, junior golf, and education. The South Florida PGA Foundation falls under the direction of the South Florida PGA, a not-for-profit organization of 2,000 men and women PGA of America Professionals serving as experts in business and the game of golf.
