STUART (Aug. 24, 2022) – There aren’t many tournaments in the South Florida PGA that Alan Morin hasn’t won. When you’ve been named Player of the Year a record 11 times, you have plenty of trophies.
Morin crossed another one off the list Wednesday when he won the South Florida Senior PGA Professional Championship at Sailfish Point Golf Club.
And he did so despite a double bogey on his first hole. Morin overcame the early mistake -- tree problems led to a ball in the water – to shoot 3-under 69 and win by four shots at 7-under 137.
“I don’t think I’ve ever done that before, winning after making double on the first hole,” Morin said. “I wasn’t too worried because I knew I was playing well. I still had 17 holes to go, and I didn’t let it bother me.”
Morin, a PGA Assistant Professional at The Club at Ibis in West Palm Beach, overcame the shaky start with birdies on the four par-5 holes, as well as the par-3 eighth. He was the only player in the field to shoot both rounds in the 60s on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course.
It wasn’t like Morin had struggled in this tournament; he tied for second last year and tied for third in 2020. This was just the third time the 53-year-old has played in the South Florida Senior PGA Professional Championship.
“One of my goals is to win both section championships,” Morin said. “I knew this was one of the tournaments I hadn’t won, so this feels great. It’s been quite a ride.”
Sharing second place at 3-under 141 were Mark Mielke, PGA (74), a PGA Teaching Professional at High Ridge Country Club, and David Witt, PGA (72), the PGA Director of Golf at Talis Park Golf Club. Mielke had a two-shot lead after he birdied the par-5 second, but eventually he was passed by Morin.
The top eight eligible finishers qualified for the Senior PGA Professional Championship in mid-October at Twin Warriors and Santa Ana in New Mexico. Morin and Mielke already were in the field.
Advancing: Steven Vecellio, PGA (71-142), PGA Director of Instruction at Frenchman’s Reserve; John Nieporte, PGA (71-144), Head PGA Professional at Trump International Golf Club; Dennis Meyer, PGA (72-144), PGA Director of Instruction at Dennis Meyer’s Golf School; Scott Newhouse, PGA (73-144) of The Forest Country Club, Roger Kennedy Jr., PGA (75-144), PGA Director of Golf at The Club at Mirasol; Dai Daily, PGA (74-144) of Don Law Academy; and Ben Stewart, PGA (78-145) of Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club.
Stewart won a two-hole playoff over former three-time champion Lee Rinker (72-145), PGA Teaching Professional at Emerald Dunes. Defending champion Jack Shoenfelt, PGA (77-154), Director of Golf Operations at Oriole Golf Club, tied for 34th place.
The South Florida Senior PGA Professional Championship, run by the South Florida PGA, is Presented by Cadillac. Supporting partners are Golf Channel, PGA Tour and Jani King.
