PUNTA GORDA, FL - On May 29th, the South Florida PGA Foundation Board members traded in their golf clubs for hammers. Stepping away from the golf course and onto the construction site, four PGA Professionals plus additional volunteers raised the walls on the Brick Family’s soon-to-be home.
The “wall raising” ceremony featured a presentation from the organizers and supporters who, over the next three months, will turn this blueprint into a reality. Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity Chief Operating Officer, Gabrielle Reineck shared their vision for assisting local families in securing the opportunity to realize the dream of homeownership.
This year Charlotte County Habitat plans on building 36 homes for local families due to the increased need for affordable housing. “Because of your generosity, financial contribution, and volunteering this will make this happen,” Gabrielle explained to the group of volunteers. “Teresa is one of those families that will have the opportunity to realize the dream of homeownership.”
Building their ninth home over the last decade, the South Florida PGA Foundation is turning a dream into a reality for Teresa Brick and her two granddaughters. In addition to the $50,000 contribution, members will join the homeowner putting in sweat equity hours throughout the build. For Teresa, this home serves as a sign of hope and security for her and the two granddaughters she is now raising herself.
During the wall-raising ceremony, Teresa expressed just how our Foundation was fulfilling their mission of changing lives throughout south Florida. “Many beautiful things cannot be touched or seen but they are felt within the heart. What you have all done for us is one of them and is something I cannot repay.” After regaining her composure, Teresa continued with her granddaughters by her side in front of what would some become the framework for their future. “There are no words to express how I feel and all I can say is you have given us a brighter future and we graciously thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Even though Teresa has already served many other families by building alongside those who are benefitting from Charlotte County Habitat, this was her first wall raising. This was special to her because these were the walls that would soon provide independence and security for her and her family.
“Every time we sponsor a home we also like to put in hours with the homeowner, but you might want to check our work,” Foundation President Tom Wildenhaus joked before the long day of building. Over the next few months, PGA Professionals from our Section will join the Brick Family in hours of building with hopes of changing the lives of another family in south Florida.
