Jan Fessel, PGA of America Life Member, embodies dedication to the game of golf and the community it serves. After nearly three decades as a green grass golf professional, Fessel found a new and meaningful way to stay connected to the sport she loves: through volunteering.
In 2024 alone, Fessel devoted over 100 hours of service across 17 South Florida PGA event days, focusing primarily on junior golf. Her efforts highlight a strong commitment to growing the game while supporting the mission of the South Florida PGA Foundation.
Dedicated to serving the south Florida community and changing lives through the game of golf, the SFPGA Foundation has impacted more than 12,000 individuals over the last ten years with a charitable focus on youth, military and families.
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Fessel became a Class A PGA of America Professional in January of 1981. Throughout her career, she held various positions, including assistant golf professional, head golf professional, and teaching professional at different facilities before retiring. Since 2007, Fessel has called Florida her year-round home, eventually aiding in her rediscovering her passion for service through golf.
"I grew up playing all sports, but golf really stood out because it was an individual sport. I could play and practice whenever I wanted," Fessel recalled. "My first tournament was at 12 years old, and it was a completely different experience than what young players have today. Watching how the game and opportunities have evolved is one of the reasons I love volunteering."
Fessel's connection to the SFPGA Foundation began over 15 years ago when she first lent her time to its junior programs. After stepping away for a period, she returned to volunteering when her schedule allowed. "I enjoy being around golf and staying connected to what's happening in the sport. It's inspiring to see junior golfers developing their skills and competing."
The South Florida PGA Junior Golf program is dedicated to fostering the growth of the game among young golfers. With a membership of more than 1,200 junior golfers, nearly 100 tournaments are administered annually.
"Even if you only have a few hours, it's worth it," said Fessel. "It's a chance to see how different facilities operate and witness incredible talent. Volunteering is a wonderful way to stay engaged and give back."
Through her service, Fessel continues to inspire and support the next generation of golfers, demonstrating that the impact of a PGA of America Professional extends far beyond the golf course.
