Bertsch, the PGA Head Professional at Club Pelican Bay in Naples, shot a 3-under 69 at Miromar Lakes Golf Club to finish a shot ahead of Tyler Collet at 8-under 208. Bertsch was one back with three holes to play after Collet posted 67-209, but Bertsch hit a good drive, a 4-iron to 15 feet and made the putt for the decisive eagle.
“I absolutely knew where I stood,” said Bertsch, who played his last 12 holes in 5-under to earn the $4,300 first prize. “They (South Florida PGA) do a great job with the live scoring to know where you are. I was thinking I would birdie 16 and then par 17 and 18 to get into a playoff, but the eagle changed everything."
“It’s great to win, but it’s getting more and more difficult to do so. We have about 10 to 15 players in our Section who are really good players and have proven themselves on the national stage. You know they’re not going to go backward down the stretch.”
Bertsch started the final round tied for the lead, but lost the lead when he double-bogeyed the par-4 sixth hole. He responded with three birdies, but was one behind Collet after he parred the par-5 15th. Bertsch also eagled the 16th hole Wednesday.
Collet has been on a recent hot streak. The PGA Assistant Professional at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach qualified for the last two PGA Championships – shooting a 71 at Southern Hills for the low PGA Professional score in the second round – and just missed qualifying for last week’s U.S. Open by two strokes.
Five players tied for third place at 5-under 211: Domenico Geminiani (68) of Old Corkscrew Golf Club, defending champion Justin Smith (68) of Bonita Bay Club, Andrew Filbert (69) of West Bay Club and Kenneth Leech (70) and ex-PGA Tour member Justin Hicks (69) of Don Law Golf Academy.
Matt Cahill (69) of Seminole Golf Club and Nick Beddow (73) of Mayacco Lakes tied for eighth at 4-under 212.
Gene Fieger, the PGA Director of Golf at Club Pelican Bay, fired a 5-under 67 to finish at 5-under 211 and defend his Senior Division title by three shots over Mark Mielke (70-214), a PGA Teaching Professional at High Ridge Country Club. Fieger won the overall title in 2003 and 2004 and gave Club Pelican Bay a sweep of the titles Thursday.
