The funds raised through the PGA HOPE Classic will support 18 of the 20 PGA HOPE programs administered annually impacting over 270 veterans. The additional funds raised through the Seminole event will support the Foundations capital campaign launched in an effort to endow the Foundation ensuring the programs continue to not just operate but that they can grow over the next few decades.
The 7th Annual PGA HOPE Classic was hosted on Wednesday at Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach. The 24 teams, made up of 96 golfers, raised $85,000 for the PGA HOPE Program which affords our nation's heroes access to the game of golf as a form of therapy.
While participants enjoyed food, drinks and a round of golf, veterans on site helped to keep the reason for the event at the forefront.
“I always have in the back of my head, that little white golf ball that I know I can whack, good, bad or indifferent,” said PGA HOPE grad and Vietnam War Veteran Mary Anderson-Kokell. “Or if I just need to ride in the golf cart on the course to make me feel better.”
Learning and playing the game of golf is a proven activity which has helped thousands of military personnel assimilate into their community through the social interaction the game of golf provides. It is welcoming to those with disabilities, enhancing their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
“Each year the PGA HOPE program conducts over 20 programs to nearly 280 participants,” explained Rob Torrington who sits on the South Florida PGA Foundation PGA HOPE Classic Committee. “The cost of one program is close to $5,000 and the cost to put one veteran through a program is $315 dollars.”
After Torrington’s comments, hands flew up to offer donations, helping the 2023 HOPE Classic raise a record amount.
Following Wednesday's great event, 80 golfers, now friends of the Foundation, enjoyed a round of golf on Thursday at one of south Florida’s most renowned golf facilities in Seminole Golf Club.
With the support from those who played, $145,000 was raised in support of the South Florida PGA Foundation programs which aim at serving youth, military and families across the south Florida community.
In addition to PGA HOPE, the South Florida PGA Foundation hosts programs including Habitat for Humanity, Smiling Fore Life, 10 ALL In, junior golf and offers college scholarships.
With assistance from the participants, PGA Professionals and supporting partners across the two events, the South Florida PGA Foundation raised over $230,000 through the two events this week.
