BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Justin Hicks, PGA and amateur Robbie Wight shoot 15-under (64-65–129) to win the South Florida PGA Pro-Scratch Championship, presented by Cleveland/Srixon/ASICS and Foresight Sports.
The 36-hole event was contested at Pine Tree Golf Club and Broken Sound - Old Course and hosted 112 teams, each made up of a PGA Professional and a scratch amateur, competing in a best-ball format.
Michael Berger, PGA with teammate amateur Joseph Latowski and Mike Melton, PGA with partner amateur Raines Holmes set the pace after round one, shooting 9-under to earn a one stroke lead over Hicks and Wight.
After already posting an 8-under par round at Broken Sound the first day, going into the final round at Pine Tree, Hicks, a former member of the golf club and Wight, a current member, felt comfortable playing on familiar turf.
“With our history here, knowing that we got off to a good start yesterday and knowing that we were going to come here and play a course we are both familiar with, we knew this was right here for us," Hicks explained.
The duo opened the final round with three consecutive pars before catching their stride, making birdie on the next three holes and closing out at the front nine at 4-under. Keeping that momentum going into the back, and ultimately finishing the final round at 7-under.
“We tagged teamed it pretty well,” Wight said. “We did not overlap on many birdies, so almost all of our birdies counted.”
The relationship between Hicks and Wight goes back over 10 years when they first met at Bear Lakes Country Club and have since played many rounds together, even to the point of Hicks bringing Wight on the bag for a U.S. Open qualifier.
After a T23 finish in last year’s Pro-Scratch, Hicks and Wight wanted to redeem that effort. When this year's event was announced, Hicks reached out to Wight to be partners again. Before the start of the first round Hicks asked Wight about how his game was feeling and Wight replied by saying, “I haven't touched a club in two weeks.” Unsure of how this would play out, Wight proceeded to birdie the first three holes and from there Hicks knew he was ready to play.
“To team up in a prominent event with the South Florida PGA it is pretty cool to come out on top,” said Wight. “We are lucky to have these two courses for an event, these are exceptional courses and to have these two for an event is special,” Hicks said.
The 2023 Pro-Scratch Championship was presented by Cleveland / Srixon / ASICS and Foresight and supported by Doc Murphy, The Golf Clinic, LensCrafters and Signature Golf.
