“It’s a meaningful endeavor,” said Rob Torrington as he reflected on his nearly 15-year relationship with the South Florida PGA Foundation.
For Torrington, the "why" behind his continued involvement with the SFPGA Foundation is simple: “Combining my passion for golf with people I love being around to achieve the noble and significant purpose of making a difference in people's quality of life."
Senior Vice President-Investments for Raymond James & Associates, Inc., Torrington has proven to be an invaluable resource as the Section’s financial advisor, Foundation advocate, and, most importantly, friend.
The South Florida PGA Foundation is dedicated to serving the south Florida community and changing lives through the game of golf. Over the last ten years, the SFPGA Foundation has impacted more than 12,000 individuals, with a charitable focus on youth, military, and families.
"In 2011, as I co-chaired an annual golf event for Habitat for Humanity, I connected with Geoff Lofstead [SFPGA Executive Director] and Meredith Schuler [SFPGA Assistant Executive Director] as a potential resource to elevate our golf tournament and improve our results," recalled Torrington.
The partnership rapidly progressed, and Torrington, in collaboration with the South Florida PGA, effectively organized the Habitat for Humanity benefit tournament for four years.
Beyond the fairways, the SFPGA Foundation was concurrently sponsoring the construction of a Habitat house each year, thereby deepening the impact of their collective efforts.
With 10 homes down and number 11 beginning this summer in the Florida Keys, the SFPGA Foundation aims to construct 14 homes: one in each county of the Section, including Puerto Rico. The Foundation contributes $50,000 and more than 250 hours of sweat equity from PGA of America Professionals to each project.
"After creating a golf tournament process and template that Habitat could execute themselves, I redirected my resources toward PGA HOPE," Torrington recollected. "Geoff invited me and other members of our golf committee to continue our partnership running successful golf tournaments for the benefit of the PGA HOPE program."
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a free program that allows Veterans and Active-Duty Military personnel to learn the game of golf. Golf is proven to help Veterans assimilate back into their community and improve their overall well-being through the social interaction and camaraderie the game provides.
In collaboration with the PGA HOPE Classic golf committee, Torrington has helped to successfully administer eight PGA HOPE Classic events, raising over $500,000 and impacting more than 1,500 Veterans in the local community.
At the 2019 PGA HOPE Classic, Torrington organized the push-up challenge, completing 1,000 push-ups and raising $40,000 for Veterans and South Florida PGA HOPE programming.
"I love the Foundation," said Torrington. "I love working and partnering with the team, people of character, integrity, faith, and genuine commitment to improving the lives of so many people in our community. People who encourage and lift others up."
