FORT MYERS (July 26, 2020) - This is starting to become repetitive: Jordan Fischer wins another South Florida PGA junior major title.
The 15-year-old North Fort Myers resident won the Patty Berg Junior Championship by 11 shots Sunday at Cypress Lake Golf Club. Fischer fired a 3-under 69 to finish at 6-under 210, comfortably ahead of Madyson Gold (71-221) of Miramar.
It was Fischer's third consecutive junior major title in the South Florida PGA after she won the Nicklaus Junior Championship and the South Florida Junior Open. Her combined margin of victory in the three events is 26 shots.
"It's pretty cool to know my game is headed in the right direction," said Fischer, who recently turned 15 and works on her game with her father, Kay Schmiedler. "My short game was pretty good this week, especially my putting. I try to focus on my own game and not worry about what the others are doing."
Fischer opened with 68 and 73 to take a six-shot lead into the final round, all but clinching the title with three birdies on her first five holes Sunday. The remaining South Florida PGA junior majors are the Doral Junior Classic Aug. 5-7 at Trump Doral and the South Florida PGA Junior Tour Championship Dec. 5-6.
"I'm trying to get into some AJGA events, but it's hard (because of the coronavirus pandemic)," Fischer said.
Gold won the 16-18 division. Gabriella DeGasperid (80) of Jupiter and Sherry Pla (83) of West Palm Beach tied for third in the overall division at 230.
Noah Kent of Naples had a 3-under 69 to win the boys overall title by a shot over Tyler Stachkunas of Lake Worth. Kent, 15, had a 3-under 33 on the back nine to finish at 3-under 213 and claim his first individual title.
Kent had a one-shot lead and was facing a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole when play was stopped for about an hour because of a thunderstorm. When play resumed, he made the putt to take a two-shot lead.
"It means a lot to win my first tournament," said Kent, who will be a sophomore at Gulf Coast High. "I play this golf course a lot with my dad. My putter was working well and so was my ball striking."
Stachkunas won the 16-18 title. Alex Heard (74) of Boca Raton was third overall at 220, two shots ahead of James Hassell of Vero Beach (76-222)
In its 28th year, the Patty Berg Junior Championship, named after the World Golf Hall of Famer and longtime Fort Myers resident, is one of the longest-running junior events in Florida. Berg and fellow Hall of Famers Gene Sarazen and Herb Graffis were co-founders of Cypress Lak
The Patty Berg Junior Championship, run by the South Florida PGA in conjunction with the Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association, is sponsored by the Honda Classic, the Boca Raton Championship, Don Law Golf Improvement Center, Florida Golf Coast University PGA Golf Management, Loyal Auto Broker, Junior Golf Hub, Nike Junior Golf Camps, OGIO, Tee Times News, the Fun Group at Mirasol and Titleist.
