A talented high school basketball player and Providence, Rhode Island native, Sara Dickson, PGA, had her eyes set on attending Brown University. It was the only school on Dickson's radar, and the pieces were falling in place until her senior year basketball season.
Dickson tore her ACL, which ultimately resulted in Brown rejecting her. While devastated in the moment, Dickson now looks back with a different perspective.
"It was one of the best things that could have happened," she explained.
At only 18-years-old, Dickson, now the Director of Golf at Wilderness Country Club, was not fazed one bit. While basketball was her main focus at the time, Dickson was also recruited by Methodist University to play golf.
Already interested in turning golf into a potential career due to her time working at a local driving range, Dickson enrolled at Methodist to study Professional Golf Management.
"I experienced internships at places that I never dreamed of even going to," she said. "Methodist was a blessing in disguise, but something I kind of knew I wanted to do anyway."
Fully passionate about the golf industry, Dickson spent the first several years after graduation working seasonally between south Florida and the Metropolitan area before making south Florida her official home in 2020 as the Head Golf Professional at Wilderness Country Club.
Two years later, Dickson was promoted to Director of Golf, overseeing the entire golf operation at Wilderness. While Dickson has made tremendous strides as a PGA of America Professional within her facility, she is also solidifying herself as an extremely valuable asset to the South Florida PGA.
Dickson was recently elected the Southwest Chapter Member-At-Large Chairperson, who also serves as a Section Board of Directors member, one of only two females on the board.
Additionally, Dickson is the 2023 Southwest Chapter Merchandiser of the Year - Private Category and the 2023 Bill Strausbaugh Award recipient, which recognizes an individual who excels in mentoring fellow PGA Professionals.
Mentoring her fellow PGA Professionals, especially at her own facility, is extremely important to Dickson as a leader.
"I know I have to be extremely organized and set expectations very early," she explained.
Dickson is committed to continued learning and taking advantage of education opportunities, seminars and programs that allow her to add skills to her arsenal.
Through a golf business network class, Dickson exposed herself to the power of having one-on-one meetings, an idea she now practices weekly.
"Every week, there is a half-hour set aside on both my schedule and every full-time member's schedule where they know they have half-an-hour with me."
This practice has allowed Dickson to foster better relationships with her staff, resulting in professional and personal growth between Dickson and her entire team.
For Dickson, growing personally and professionally within the golf industry never ends, and she compares it to the actual playing of golf.
"There's not that tangible time when you're like, yes, I have completed golf," Dickson explained. "I view that the same way with the operation at Wilderness. I can always get better at efficiency, communication, leadership, and the environment we are in; it changes more than what we might think."
In closing, Dickson's response was simple when asked about being a female in a male-dominated industry:
"It is golf, a game for everybody."
