STUART (Sept. 7, 2018) - Dan Heaslip earned the biggest win of his senior career Friday with a three-shot victory in the South Florida PGA Senior Professional Championship at Sailfish Point.
Heaslip didn't match the sterling 67 he shot in Thursday's first round, but he didn't have to. He started the day with a three-shot lead and finished it with the same advantage.
""It means a lot to get to win because the guys in this section seem to get stronger every year,"" said Heaslip, the PGA Director of Golf at Windstar on Naples Bay.
""To compete with guys at this level is fun. It's something we don't get to do that often, usually only in the summers, but the South Florida PGA puts on great tournaments.""
Heaslip was never over par Friday, making three birdies and two bogeys to finish at 6-under 138. He played in this year's Senior PGA Championship.
""I hit the ball really well today, I just didn't make any putts,"" Heaslip said. ""I figured I would have to shoot under par to win and I was able to do that.""
Brian Peaper, the PGA Director of Golf at Lost Tree Club, shot the day's best round by three strokes, a 5-under 67, and tied for second at 3-under 141 with host PGA Professional Victor Tortorici (70). Peaper birdied four of his last six holes.
David Ladd of The Champions Club in Stuart tied for fourth at 142 with Chris Kaufman of BallenIsles. Each shot 71.
Qualifying for the Senior PGA Professional Championship Oct. 25-28 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie were: Heaslip, Peaper, Tortorici, Kaufman, Nevin Sutcliffe (71-144) of Majestic Golf Club, Tom Dyer (72-144) of Old Marsh, Eric Vielleux (73-144) of the Bear's Club and Dennis Meyer (72-145).
