ATLANTIS, FL - South Florida PGA Junior Tour members Garrett Giles and Jude Kim will play in the 44th Boys Junior PGA Championship beginning today, July 30th at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford. The four-day tournament runs through Friday.
One of junior golf's premier championships, Giles and Kim will represent South Florida PGA Junior Tour after finishing first and second, respectfully at the SFPGA Junior PGA Championship in June. Players in the field of 144 qualified based on several criteria, including the champions from each of the PGA of America's 41 section junior championships.
Giles, of Palm City, made a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to rally from a two-shot deficit to win the Boys 16-18 division back in June at Boca West Country Club with a five-under 137 (68-69). Kim, of Plantation, finished just behind Giles at 138 to also qualify.
Additionally, south Florida residents and SFPGA Junior Tour members, Luke Clanton (Hialeah), Brett Roberts (Coral Springs), Frankie Harris (Boca Raton), Jake Beber-Frankel (Miami) and Leopoldo Herrera LLL (Doral) will compete as a result of exemptions earned through the performance in other national junior events, national amateur/open events, diversity and inclusion events and other special considerations.
The Boys Junior PGA will be contested in Connecticut for the first time. Keney Park opened in 1927 with a nine-hole course designed by Devereux Emmet; the Robert ""Jack"" Ross-designed back nine opened four years later. In 2014, the Connecticut PGA Section signed an agreement to serve as City of Hartford consultants to help them regain operational ownership of Keney Park and oversee a course restoration to enhance the facility's level of sustainability. Following a 30-month restoration, Keney Park reopened for play on May 1, 2016.
Over the years, many past and present PGA Tour stars have competed in this event, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
Akshay Bhatia became the first two-time winner following his victory in the 2018 Boys Junior PGA, which was secured with a greenside chip-in eagle on the 72nd hole at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Bhatia also won in 2017.
