With more than 100 PGA TOUR starts, 150 Korn Ferry Tour starts and over $3 Million earned, Justin Hicks, PGA has transitioned from playing professional golf at the highest level to a PGA Teaching Professional, sharing his knowledge and passion for the game with the next generation of golfers.
For Hicks, originally from Wyandotte, MI, golf has always been a staple in his life. Playing professional golf at any level is a dream for many golfers growing up, but for Hicks, that dream didn’t come easy.
“I was a late bloomer," he explained. “It took me a while to get going, I was working the first five-six years at clubs and then finally was able to get enough money raised through friends, that I was able to go out there and give it a shot.”
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Hicks finished 25th on the Korn Ferry Tour (formerly known as the Nationwide Tour) money list and earned a PGA TOUR card for the 2011 season.
Over his nine year career on TOUR, Hicks had the opportunity to play alongside the best players in the World, competing in seven major championships and even leading the 2008 U.S. Open after an opening round 68.
However, as the 2016 season got underway, Hicks struggled to maintain his TOUR card while dealing with injuries and the grueling mental battle of playing a professional sport at the very highest level. During this time, Hicks began thinking of other options outside of playing, but knew his passion was still in golf.
“I considered some options, but I've done golf my whole life," Hicks said. “It is something that I love to do and I thought I wanted to give this a go with teaching.”
Thankfully, Hicks surrounded himself with a supporting cast of PGA Professionals that helped guide him through the process, including his swing coach, Matt Messer, PGA Director of Golf at Bear Lakes Country Club and Steve Haggard, PGA.
Once Hicks received his A-6 PGA Membership, he dove right into teaching, while learning from other PGA Members to help him perfect his new craft.
“I really enjoy the feeling I get from accomplishing stuff with my students, that is a huge part of it," he said. “It is something that comes from within, I'm driven to see success, I get a lot of happiness myself from seeing that other people are feeling happier about their golf game.”
Now, roughly three years into his teaching career, Hicks has spent time at the Don Law Teaching Academy, a premiere Junior Golf Academy in south Florida, and recently began teaching out of Stonebridge Country Club in Boca Raton, working with all ages and skill levels of golfers.
“Coming from the playing side of it, the one thing that playing golf for a living taught me was that whatever I am going to do, I'm going to try and be the best at it,” explained Hicks, “When you are out there playing and you realize you are literally out there trying to be the best golfer in the world or chasing that person down, I think that mentality is what I try to bring to my job now.”
Hicks encourages other playing professionals to consider teaching as a way to continue their involvement with the game and to also share their experiences to help groom the next generation of great golfers.
Having the ability to reach out to other PGA Professionals is extremely important when considering the transition, because of the difficulties and unknown, said Hicks.
“You have to have some people who are accomplished PGA Professionals that can kind of help mentor or guide you in the process,” he said. “Having some people out there that you can talk to that are able to help you understand a little bit of what you are going through and how to navigate some of these hurdles is really helpful, that is a huge part of it for me.”
Playing professional golf on the PGA TOUR is the ultimate goal for many golfers, but the opportunities available to stay within the golf industry and to make an impact on others will always be there. From playing a full PGA TOUR season to becoming a PGA Member, Hicks has not lost his passion and drive to become the best version of himself in whatever area he is in.
