Fresh out of college with an undeniably strong work ethic but no set plan for a job, Jane Broderick decided to take a chance and move to south Florida to pursue a career in golf, her new found passion.
As a college student, Broderick worked two jobs to get through school, as a telephone operator during the evening hours and painting houses in the summer. During her final year, Broderick’s mother suffered a heart attack, while she did survive, Broderick knew she needed to get more active. The following semester, Broderick quit her job painting houses and recommended to her mother that they begin playing golf together, the sport her mom always loved.
During that time, Broderick became hooked and was introduced to a local Golf Professional in her hometown named Pat Palmieri, who helped Broderick learn the game. He told Broderick that if she didn't have any plans after school that she should come down to Florida and try to work at this place called PGA National because he believed she had a future in golf.
The following fall, Broderick did exactly that and took a chance, moving to south Florida with no plan of action but believed golf was what she wanted to pursue. She was able to find a place to live through a family member and commuted to the PGA National area daily to work with Palmieri on her game in a field behind a local school.
Every other day, Broderick would call PGA National asking if there were any positions available until one day she decided to go into the pro shop and ask to speak with the Head Professional. To her surprise the head professional turned around and said, “Jane, I have been meaning to call you, when can you start?” From there, Broderick took the opportunity and did not look back.
Starting off in the bag room, a position quickly opened in the tee time office and because of her experience as a telephone operator, Broderick made sure to take the opportunity.
From there, Broderick’s journey really began, as she was moved into the Golf Shop, then Golf Shop Supervisor, Tournament Coordinator, Director of Tournament Operations, Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf and now nearly 38 years later, Broderick serves as the Club Manager at PGA National.
Growing up, Broderick did not have a huge interest in golf as her passion was heavily in skiing, but she knew there were not as many opportunities in skiing and believed she had bigger plans. Even during her college years, Broderick did not see herself in golf and it wasn’t until her senior year that she found an interest in the game.
“My college focus went from being an environmental attorney to working in cardiac rehabilitation to then all of sudden, I had this massive interest in golf,” she said. “I figured I could do the other things later down the road if golf didn’t pan out.”
While golf certainly worked out for Broderick, her path to becoming one of the most respected Professionals in south Florida was not always easy. Broderick found her passion and immediately became obsessed with it.
Broderick comes from a small town in upstate New York and the community and small town feel she grew up accustomed to, is similar to PGA National which has helped her stay at the facility all these years.
“There are more residents that live in PGA National than people that live in my hometown,” Broderick explained. “From the minute I first stepped on the property, I can remember it like it was yesterday, an energy came through my body. PGA National is like a little city and I wanted that small town feeling.”
Now after nearly 38 years at the same place, Broderick has learned a lot about herself and how to manage a facility as prolific as PGA National.
Broderick is extremely loyal, which in fairness is obvious by her commitment to the resort. Additionally, the relationships and trust in her team created over the years has helped make Broderick so successful - even working with the children of her past employees.
“You have to have trust in the people around you and allow them to make decisions," Broderick said. “I challenge people when they come to me with a problem, to also come with a solution that we can talk through. You have to be able to delegate and respect the work that your team does.”
Lastly, when asked what has led Broderick to all the success she has seen, she mentioned a quote that she often recites to her employees.
“Trust your gut,” she says. “A wrong decision in my world is probably better than no decision at all.”
