FORT LAUDERDALE (May 3, 2022) – Evan Bowser eagled the par-5 14th hole Tuesday at Fort Lauderdale Country Club to break out of a tight leaderboard and win the Fort Lauderdale Open.
Bowser parred his first 13 holes before he bombed his drive at the par-5 14th and only had an 8-iron from 173 yards. Bowser hit it inside a foot and made the eagle to take the lead for good in the first South Florida PGA major championship of the season.
Bowser, an Assistant Professional at LaPlaya Golf Club in Naples, shot 2-under 69 to finish at 7-under 135. He was one ahead of three golfers.
“It was a little frustrating to make all the pars because I had birdie looks at every hole,” Bowser said. “But I hit a good drive at 14 and had a perfect yardage.”
Bowser added a birdie at No. 16 to give him a two-shot lead, which came in handy when he three-putted the final hole for a bogey.
It was Bowesr’s only bogey of the tournament, but it didn’t matter. He had won the season-opening Fort Lauderdale Open, long considered a major on the South Florida PGA schedule.
“It’s such a great feeling to win this tournament because it kicks off everyone’s year,” Bowser said. “The tournament has great history and it’s a good course. Hopefully, I can carry this momentum through the summer.
Paul Scaletta (66) of the Bear’s Club made four birdies in a five-hole stretch and tied for second with Kenny Leech (67) of Don Law Academy and Joe Kern (67) of The Moorings at Hawk’s Nest Club in Vero Beach.
Andrew Filbert of West Bay Club, who won this event in 2017 and 2018, tied for fifth at 137 with Jason Martin (68) of Old Collier Golf Club, Dustin Wallis of Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club and Nick Latimer-Zabor (70) of Trump International Golf Club.
Kern won the Senior Division, finishing a shot ahead of Gene Fieger (69-137) of Club Pelican Bay.
Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound led after a 66 Monday, but he and four others were disqualified Tuesday after an accident on Florida’s Turnpike caused them to miss their tee times because of a three-hour delay. San Filippo still drove to the course to honor an old friend, Steve Mullen.
Mullen was the former Director of Instruction at Fort Lauderdale Country Club who died about a decade ago at 51. The club had dedicated a plaque to Mullen and San Filippo noticed how the plaque had been overgrown by weeds.
“You couldn’t even make out the name, it was so dirty and overgrown,” said San Filippo, who brought his own shovel and bucket. “I made up my mind I was going to fix that, and that’s why I came today. It’s the only thing that salvaged my day.”
The Fort Lauderdale Open is run by the South Florida PGA and Presenting partner is Srixon Cleveland ASICS. Supporting partners are Blue Tees Golf, Global Golf Sales and Maui Jim.
