When thinking of typical punishments for 13-year-olds, making them go to a golf course to be around the game is not the first that would come to mind. While a punishment at the time, nearly 30 years later, the “punishment” has turned into Stephanie Reeves, PGA’s life.
For almost ten years, Reeves has served as the Director of Golf at Countryside Golf and Country Club, but her path to becoming a Class-A PGA member was not always the easiest.
At 13, Reeves was introduced to the game of golf, but not in a typical manner. After a school incident that had her suspended for a number of days, Reeves was forced to go to the golf course to learn about the game. Shortly thereafter, Reeves grew a liking for the game and quickly realized she was pretty good at it.
“My mom was not going to let me stay home and enjoy myself so she took me to the golf course,” explained Reeves. “When I was there I realized I was the only girl and there were other young boys that played, so as a 13-year-old girl I thought this was pretty cool.”
After catching on quickly, Reeves joined the high school team and eventually had the opportunity to play college golf at Siena College where she led her team in scoring average and was named to the MAAC Women’s Golf All-Academic team as a Junior.
Graduating with a finance degree, Reeves knew her passion was still in golf and decided to enroll in the PGA Program in Port St. Lucie while taking a seasonal position in Naples.
Upon finishing the program, Reeves obtained an Assistant Professional position at Bear’s Paw before eventually moving to Countryside as an Assistant Professional and ultimately becoming the Director of Golf in 2014.
As an Assistant, Reeves knew she had the ability to lead a team and become a Director of Golf but knew the odds were stacked against her as a female in a traditionally male-dominated role.
“You kind of feel like you beat the odds,” she explained. “When I applied for this position here at Countryside there were roughly 90 applicants.”
Now, as a leader in her field, Reeves is passionate about growing the game and encouraging other females to enter the industry, believing the opportunities for women exist.
As a result, Reeves has had the opportunity to mentor and guide another young female, Samantha Coleman, PGA who serves as an Assistant Professional and Head of Merchandising at Countryside Golf and Country Club.
Coleman, a South Florida PGA Junior Tour Alum, had a different path to becoming a Class-A PGA member, taking the Professional Golf Management route while an undergraduate at Florida Gulf Coast University.
During her time on the Junior Tour, Coleman was introduced to the PGM program through a South Florida PGA College Seminar, led by industry professionals, former junior tour members and FGCU PGM Director, Tara McKenna, PGA.
As a sophomore in high school, Coleman immediately knew this was her path as she recalled looking at her dad and saying how cool it sounded while listening to McKenna explain what the PGM program was.
As Coleman began the program, she was introduced to Reeves who served as a mentor for up and coming female PGA Professionals at FGCU. The two kept in contact as Coleman continued at FGCU as the only female in a class of 36 people.
While being the only female in her class, Coleman said she never felt discouraged or out of place, but took it more as encouragement to continue keeping her head down as she knew there was a path for her.
Fast forward to her senior year, Coleman had already spent one season interning at Countryside, as she began looking for full-time positions, Countryside was in need of Assistant Professionals, so Coleman called her mentor Reeves and before graduating she was hired full-time.
The two now share a special bond as two female professionals with very different routes to where they are now, but their outlook on the industry and the potential for more females in the profession has never been more positive.
When asked for words of encouragement for females interested in pursuing a career in golf, their answers were simple but held a strong message.
“If you are passionate about it, go do it,” Reeves explained.
“There is so much that you can do in the industry, but until you get there, you don’t truly know," said Coleman. “There is really no limit on what you can do.”
