Miromar Lakes, FL - Tim Cantwell, PGA made a final round surge, erasing a two-shot deficit to win the E-Z-GO South Florida Open by two shots at Miromar Lakes Golf Club and Olde Hickory Golf and Country Club.
After two consecutive rounds of 3-under par 69, Cantwell, a PGA Teaching Professional at PGA National Golf Club entered the final round two shots back of Christian De Greiff, PGA.
Cantwell started off with a birdie on hole number one, setting the stage for his eventual third consecutive 3-under par round to claim the Major Championship by two shots over De Greiff, Justin Bertsch, PGA and Brant Peaper.
“I knew it was going to be tough out there, I just took it one shot at a time,” said Cantwell.” It was exciting to play well, this was very unexpected.”
With wind gusts up to 25 mph consistently throughout the final round, Cantwell managed only two bogeys over his final 18 holes to match the final round low of 3-under 69.
“With the fairway being a little more generous, for me, it came down to making putts, and thankfully, I was able to make a couple,” explained Cantwell.
Rounding out the top-5 at 6-under par was Alan Morin, PGA.
In the Senior Division, which finished after the conclusion of round two, Steve Vecellio, PGA took home the Major Championship honors at 7-under, outlasting Morin and Cantwell by one shot.
“I'm pretty stoked, I can’t even explain it,” said Vecellio, the PGA Director of Instruction at Frenchman’s Reserve Country Club.
A 3-under 69 in round one had Vecellio only one shot behind Morin entering the final round. After a 1-over first nine holes, Vecellio dropped to three back. With six holes left to play, Vecellio caught fire, playing the final stretch at 6-under, including a chip-in eagle on the par-5, fifth hole.
That stretch was enough to outlast Morin and Cantwell, who made bogey and double bogey, respectively, on the 17th, dropping them both one shot shy.
The win marked the first individual stroke play event win for Vecellio and credited a lesson with Jerry Tucker, PGA that made the difference.
“I took a lesson with Jerry Tucker, PGA, last week, and all we talked about was setting goals and getting a win,” explained Vecellio. “It is kind of weird that it happened this quickly.”
The E-Z-GO South Florida Open is the second of four South Florida PGA Major Championships to be played throughout the 2024 season. E-Z-GO served as the event's title partner while Ahead, StrackaLine, StickX Golf, Tagmarshal and the PGA TOUR served as supporting partners.
