ATLANTIS, Fla. – This weekend, the South Florida PGA Junior Championship Tour presented by The Honda Classic held the Pukka Junior Championship at the Country Club of Coral Springs in Coral Springs. Two juniors put together outstanding rounds in brutal conditions.
Fletcher Wunderlich of Port St. Lucie opened up round one with a 1-under-par 70 to take the early lead in the boys division. Saturday featured winds holding steady at 20 MPH all day with gust hitting over 30 MPH. Coral Gables native Cameron Piedra, Jupiter native Ryder Sutcliffe and Weston native Alberto Martinez each fired 1-over-par 72’s to keep within striking distance of Wunderlich. Sunday’s weather conditions worsened as winds held steady at 25 MPH with gust hitting over 35 MPH during the final round. Wunderlich started off the final round with birdies on holes #1 and #2 to start to distance himself from the pack. Martinez managed to stay close, grinding out 4 straight pars before birding the 5th and 9th holes to close the gap on Wunderlich. Boca Raton native Ryan Adams made a run at the lead on Sunday after finding himself 3-under-par through 14 holes. Adams late round push fell short with double on the 15th hole. Wunderlich and Martinez continued to battle on the back 9. Wunderlich’s would go on to bogey the 17th and 18th holes while Martinez finished with a closing birdie on 18 to capture the boy’s title. Piedra would go on to take home the boy’s 13-15 age division, while Adams would take home the boy’s 16-18 age division title.
Loxahatchee native Haylie Turnquest opened up round one with a 4-over-par 75 to take the early lead in the girls division. Kerttu Hiltunen of West Palm Beach found herself one stroke off Turnquest lead after and opening round 75. Turnquest struggled to deal with the strong wind on Sunday as she quickly saw her lead over Hiltunen fade. Hiltunen would go on to fire a final round 1-over-par 72 to capture the girl’s title and her first Championship Tour victory. Delray Beach native Makenna Rodriguez fired a final round 1-over-par 72 to capture the girl’s 13-15 age division. Jupiter native Sophia Dieter would take home the girl’s 16-18 age division.
