Southeast Chapter Retains Nelson Cup

FORT MYERS, Fla. – As the saying goes, it’s not how you start, but how you finish.  It came down to the final two matches during the afternoon session and the Southeast Chapter professional team claimed a one-point victory in the 26th annual Nelson Cup matches held at The Verandah Club (Old Orange course) on Monday, April 24th.  This event is conducted by the South Florida PGA Section and supported by TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth Golf. After falling behind by six points during the morning foursome matches, the Southeast Chapter was still behind this deficit with just two matches remaining in the afternoon single matches (three-ball format).  Southeast Chapter team members Jerry Tucker, PGA and Alan Morin, PGA were in the final two groups and each earned six points in their matches to help claim the one-point victory. The Southeast Chapter, which stretches from Boca Raton to Vero Beach, edged the Southwest Chapter 67 to 66.  The Southern Chapter was third with 29 points.  The Southwest Chapter includes the Naples-Fort Myers area, while the Southern Chapter primarily includes Broward and Miami-Dade counties.  This is the ninth win for the Southeast Chapter since the Nelson Cup matches began in 1992.  The Southwest Chapter has 11 and the Southern Chapter has 3; in addition to three rain out years. On behalf of the South Florida PGA, we thank our event partner TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth Golf and Bill & Sandi Bishop for their continued support.  The South Florida PGA would also like to recognize the Nelson family, all of the participating PGA Professionals for committing to play in such an exciting event and the Verandah Club for being such gracious hosts.  For full match results, click here or view more information [...]

2017 National Car Rental Foundation Pro-Am

Thirty-four teams competed in the third annual National Car Rental Foundation Pro-Am on Monday, February 27 held at Fort Lauderdale Country Club (North Course).   Each team was comprised of one PGA Member/Apprentice and one amateur.  The format was one best ball of the two player team, with amateurs receiving 90% of their handicap.   Taking home the overall team title was PGA Assistant Golf Professional Josiah Singletary from the Jim McLean Golf School-Doral and his amateur partner Tim Miller.  They posted an impressive 9-under-par 63 and tied for low round honors with Apprentice Michael Berger and his amateur partner Brian Mallonee.  A scorecard playoff was used to determine the winning team, with Singletary/Miller having the better overall back nine score.  Along with the team champions, Apprentice and Assistant Golf Professional Michael Kartrude from The Bear's Club was the low pro for the event after posting a 3-under-par 69. In addition to the event winners, this Pro-Am helped raised over $4,000 for the South Florida PGA Foundation.  The South Florida PGA Foundation, founded in 2004, has more than tripled in size over the past six years with a mission to serve the south Florida community.  Programs conducted through the Foundation include junior golf, charitable gifting and scholarship, Smiling Fore Life, PGA H.O.P.E. (helping our patriots everywhere) and community outreach with Habitat for Humanity being one of the main beneficiaries. Special thanks to PGA Director of Golf Mark VanDyck, PGA General Manager Michael O'Brien and their entire staff at Fort Lauderdale Country Club for a great day.  The golf course and putting greens were in excellent shape and provided a nice test for players.  We would also like to recognize and thank National Car Rental for their [...]
